Characteristics
of Jacob Sheep
The Jacob is a rare primitive breed, a
horned, piebald sheep. They are very intelligent and make good mothers. They
are white with black or lilac spots or shades of gray, brown,
chocolate or mocha. There are specific breed markings that
distinguish the Jacob from other black and white sheep. The Jacob
typically has markings around the eyes and muzzle, with spots on the
nape of the neck, ears, knees, hocks and pasterns. The rest of
the body is more or less covered with random patches or spots of
color. The random patterns give each sheep a unique look, no two
are exactly the same. The ratio of white to black will average
60% white and 40% black, though the actual ratio on a given sheep
varies. More white is a better sign of purity than heavy black.
Jacob ewes weigh from 80 to 120 pounds, rams weighing from 100 to
180 pounds.
The horns of the Jacob are a tribute to it's uniqueness. The
Jacob is a multiple horn breed. Both ewes and rams have horns. The
number of horns varies from two to six, most often two and four
are seen. Horns of Jacob rams are quite magnificent!
The lovely Jacob wool is usually classed as a medium wool with
good luster, the fleece is open with nice handle. The wool is
loved by handspinners and weavers and can be finer when bred for
spinners use. It makes a strong, springy yarn. Great for socks,
sweaters and fine knit wear. The many color variations are a
great feature.
Jacobs are small boned and have the conformation that allows easy
lambing and quick escape. The ewe lambs mature quickly, and
frequently breed in the fall of their first year. They are
excellent mothers, having lambs that are on their feet and on the
go very quickly. These sheep show a degree of intelligence that
is unknown in the commercial world. (Domestic primitive breeds
like the Jacob actually have an 8% larger brain than commercial
breeds.)
There are two breed registries in the US. The Jacob Sheep
Breeders Association (JSBA), and The Jacob Sheep Conservancy
(JSC). Either are happy to help inform & educate the public
on the many reasons Jacob breeders love Jacob sheep! Jacob
breeders are a friendly and helpful group, always willing to
share their experiences.
