The (no longer short) History of Magic Moon Farm
Updated 2/18/01
Kyle and Linda Somers moved to the Siuslaw Valley in the beautiful Oregon Coastal Range on March 1st, 1995, from Dallas, Texas. Linda was destined to be a farm girl. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, she spent most of her childhood with race horses, rodeo animals and her suburban menagerie of pets that drove her mother nuts! Kyle, originally from Spirit Lake, Iowa, also had his share of exposure to the country life as a child. But alas, they were both slaves of the city until they made that big move! Kyle and Linda's (dog) children Magic & Moon asked for a farm for Christmas. They came to Oregon with a dream, without knowing anyone here, or ever having even been here except to pick out the farm! Leaving Linda's son Reese and his wife Heather behind (very difficult) in Dallas, they made the journey west to test the waters of the promised land. The planned goals really started to come together 2 years later when Reese and Heather joined them here! Main goal complete! Family intact!!
Once in Oregon they began setting up housekeeping in the tiny old fixer-upper farm house built in the 40's and 50's and 60's and .. well, you get the picture. With them came Magic & Moon the 4 legged loves of their lives, 4 cats, 2 parrots, Junior the Iguana, and who knows what else was in there. The former owner of the farm had it set up for sheep and chickens. He told them he had raised Jacob sheep. He explained that they were a quite smart, hardy, primitive and idiot-proof breed. He called them colored sheep but never really said what they looked like except that they were horned sheep. He explained how they kept the grass mowed and had nice wool. So the plan in Linda's head to have some "black" sheep as lawn mowers for the pastures was coming clearer. She got some chickens and a dairy goat... They planted an organic garden, blueberries and herbs.... Magic & Moon(s) farm was off and running!

Then one day on the way to Eugene for a supply run, Linda was driving east on Hwy 36 when she almost ran off the road!! "Oh my!!!" She shrieked... "Wha..wha..what is that??" She pulled off the road and gazed at the sight that had AMAZED her... a flock of Jacob sheep! She wasn't even sure if they were sheep or goats.... on the gate post was as a sign that read "Jacob Lambs for Sale". Awestruck like a deer in the headlights she just sat and gawked at these beautiful sheep! She knew at that very minute that they were the sheep for her! Once she composed herself she remembered what the man had said about Jacob sheep and quickly wrote down the phone number on the sign. That sign belonged to Ann, now Linda's dear friend, spinning teacher and the BRAVE soul who had volunteered to teach the old dog a new trick, "Linda to knit." A job ONLY for the professionally patient! Much thanks to Ann, and the sheep, Linda has developed a case of fiberholic mania! She learned to spin and works hard to make fiber an important part of what Magic Moon Farm is all about! Last year came Joe the llama to guard the sheep, and guess what? He has a beautiful fleece! So do the cats now that she looks closer... Look out birds, she will spin up some part of you too!
In the days since they arrived in Oregon in 1995, they have made many cherished friends. Kyle has worked hard to establish 4R's Quality Construction, his construction and remodeling business. Working from Eugene to Florence, Kyle has made many happy customers in the area. Kyle and his dad Red, who lives in Minnesota (who always seems to be needed to help Kyle on a job here right at Salmon fishing and Elk hunting time) added a 2 story 400+ sq. foot addition onto the tiny house last year making it almost normal sized now, with a view of the dream! The 2'nd floor that Kyle added was Linda's office and fiber haven with a cool loft! Passers by called it "the tower" because it was all that could be seen of the house through the trees from the road... and all was well...
OK fine... seems as if all is well right? It was until...
April 27th, 1999 when EVERYTHING changed.
That was the day of the big fire! The old farm house burned to the ground!
In the days that followed MANY wonderful things happened. Within just hours shelter was provided in the way of a truly awesome HUGE 30-something-foot 5th wheel camper donated by the dear Ellis & Geri Worthylake. This thing is like the penthouse! Warm and snug with all the comforts of home.
Many friends, neighbors and total strangers came with food & supplies. Many more friends ran errands and brought needed items. The DMV even took the bank lady's word for who she was and agreed to give Linda a new Driver's License and thus an identity without showing ID! Countless wonderful people came to the rescue and really soon they were on the way to resuming some normalcy. Reese & Heather helped a LOT, and brought Linda photos of her cherished memories to fill the many gaps. The McAllister's were like a miracle sent to help on one of the most crucial needs, plans to get a new house started! Thanks to Mike & Jeremy a professionally engineered (earthquake safe) design was quickly hammered out and construction started on a new house!
And you should see it now! Newer, bigger, & better than before. Kyle is building their dream home from the ground up and it is almost finished!. The funny thing is it is very much like the old house, they just fixed everything that was wrong with the built in pieces design. With once again the help of good friends & family who put their lives on hold and came all the way from Michigan, Minnesota & Colorado (Thank you Farmer Jim, Matt, Katt & Nuclear Bob!) to help build. Kyle's dad came for a while during the very important part of raising the main beams, and even our beloved Jah-Raffe came all the way from Texas to lend a hand. Friends like Ellis and Shannon put endless hours into the project. All this resulting in a really fun summer & a home built with a lot of love!
Then in September of 2000 another gift arrived! Linda's 15 year old grandson Joshua came to live with us here in Oregon! He is a freshman, going to Mapleton high school, and a thrill to have around! A photo of Josh will show up here soon, he is pretty good at ducking the camera!
