Don't worry, we get this question all the time. Gasquet was originally founded back in 1853 when an enterprising young Frenchman named Horace Gasquet arrived in Crescent City, California seeking his fortune during the gold rush. Horace quickly realized that his gold is not in the mine; but in the miners and established the town of Gasquet 18 miles to the Northeast of Crescent City.
The village of Gasquet has grown a great deal since Horace erected the first building back in 1857. Gasquet now boasts a church, an elementary school (K-5), a craft shop, Gasquet Mobile Home Park, volunteer fire department, a U.S. Post Office, an American Legion Hall, a U.S. Forest Ranger Station, a Community Council, a cafe, a motel, a village store, and even a small airstrip for private aircraft.
Steelhead, salmon, and cutthroat fishing is popular in the Middle and North Forks of the "mighty" Smith River. Kayaking trips are offered by the Redwood National Park. The community also offers annual raft races, BBQ's, flea markets, dances, and a wide variety of family activities.
The Village of Gasquet can be easily reached by taking Highway 199 East from Crescent City. We promise you'll enjoy the gorgeous 18 mile drive through the Redwoods!
