Gold Beach Fly-In & Pancake Breakfast

Airport Activity Day

T-6 Texan

The last year the Fly-in & Pancake Breakfast / Airport Activity Day event was held was on September 11, 1999.  An all you can eat pancake breakfast was held at the Senior Center located across the street from the terminal / pilots lounge for $4.00.  Weather was excellent, and we had a nice turnout of aircraft.

The last Fly-in & Pancake Breakfast / Airport Activity Day was scheduled for Saturday, September 9, 2000, but was canceled due to runaway budgets and lack of funding.  This would have been the 8th year for me in putting this event together.  I have left the rest of this page as is, so that you may see info on past events.  I do not plan to do this event again.  I do still help put together the annual Brookings Flying Club Fly-In at Brookings, Oregon (which I have helped with for several years).  Normally we give about 400 plane and helicopter rides each year.  I also organized a Gathering of Musketeers at the Arlington, WA Fly-In and Air Show in July 6-9, but have not done that since 2003.

Admission is free to all, whether they drive, walk, bicycle, or fly in. We will offer plane rides for $15.00, helicopter rides for $20.00, and skydiving will be performed thruout the day by Wright Brothers Skydiving of Creswell, Oregon.  The Oregon Warbird Squadron will be flying in with some some warbirds.

EAA Experimental aircraft will be on display. The following factories will been invited.

Van's Aircraft, (RV's)

New Glasair (Formally Stodard-Hamilton)

Neico Aviation Inc. (Lancair)

We will have Remote Controlled aircraft show, both static display, and aerobatic flying demo put on by the Tidewater Taildraggers R/C Airshow Team, all members of the Bay Area R/C flyers from Coos Bay, Oregon. They will put on a very fine show with two biplanes with 6' wing spans doing dog fights with smoke, and a radio controlled parachutist!

For two years, the weather did not cooperate, therefore I moved the event up a month two years ago to catch the warm sun rays and excellent flying weather. The year before the two years of bad weather, some 80 aircraft flew in and participated. Double the year before, which was triple the year before, the first one we did. I am billing the Gold Beach Airport Activity Day / Fly-In & Pancake Breakfast as the fastest growing event of it's kind in Oregon, and this year I believe we will have a nice collection of warbirds on the South Oregon Coast since.   Last year, the weather in Gold Beach was perfect, but unfortunately a good deal of Oregon and Washington were IFR, canceling several warbirds from departing their home base. We still had a good turnout, and had a pristine T-28 that used to belong to NASA on display all day, and departing with a fantastic low pass to the delight of all.

This is a fine opportunity for pilots to finish the fly-in season. September is one of the nicest months of the year with some of the best flying and no wind weather the South Oregon Coast has to offer. The Oregon Pilots Association may participate. Several members are expected to be there. There will be plenty of pilots from all walks of life with all kinds of aircraft for pilots to talk to, and also a golden opportunity for the non flying public to see the planes up close and talk to the pilots.

The Gold Beach Airport (4S1) is located at the beach at the mouth of the beautiful Rogue River, arguably the most scenic airport to fly into in Oregon. Traffic pattern is out over the ocean. It is left traffic runway 34, and right traffic runway 16. Pattern altitude is 800 feet. Unicom is 122.8. Runway is 3200' x 75', and paved. A new seal coat was put on 3 years ago, and is in excellent condition. Fuel available is 100LL, and JetA. Recommended entrance procedures are on an extended downwind, or on a 45 degree entry into the downwind. Cross midfield at 2,000' or above. Gold Beach is a non controlled airport, and traffic will be heavy until late afternoon. Helicopters will be operating all day. Skydivers will be jumping throughout the day.

There is a restaurant within walking distance of the airport, and many people fly in, and walk to the restaurant whenever the weather permits. The Senior Center was swamped and almost consumed for the pancake breakfast in past years. The breakfast was from 8:00 to 11:00 last year, but they may extend the hours this year, just to accommodate the mob. We will have food vendors at the airport all day with the usual hot dogs, hamburgers, coffee, cokes and so forth.

The best contact number is for the Port of Gold Beach, which manages the airport. It is 541-247-6269, or email at the Port of Gold Beach.   Also, the Gold Beach Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-525-2334

All photos on this page were taken at a previous Fly-in at Gold Beach.
