The Company We Keep

What do Winston Churchill, Vincent VanGogh, and Ted Turner all have in common? A diagnosis of mental illness. Despite the best efforts of the Mental Death System to categorize the awareness-enhanced as intellectually-deficient 4-year olds who must have their freedom restricted, their options contained, and their activities supervised by others-- primarily by all-knowing MHPs-- a brief perusal of the names listed below will show this self-serving lie for what it is, and what it has always been-- an attempt by the mediocre to control that which surpasses their limited powers of comprehension. The lists that follow represent no more than a partial sampling of the perceptually-different who, either during or after their lifetimes, were assigned a psychiatric diagnosis. The debate rages on about many of the past-- and present-- but the stigmatization of labelling cannot diminish the accomplishments of labeled.

These names were drawn from numerous sources, including-- but not limited to-- Kay Redfield Jamison's highly acclaimed book "Touched With Fire." All living persons listed have publicly acknowledged their experiences with one or another variety of psychiatric "disorder," with each dealing with it as he or she sees fit. The message to be found here was best stated by R.D. Laing, who pointed out that "Madness need not all be breakdown-- it may also be breakthrough."
